Recently the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest U.S. association of medical professionals, called for an outright ban on direct-to-consumer (DTC) ads for prescription drugs. Professor Patti Zettler talked to Stat about the AMA’s proposal and the current scope of the FDA’s authority over DTC drug ads, which does not include authority to ban such ads. She was a former attorney with the Food and Drug Administration. Zettler’s research focuses on the regulation of medicine, biotechnology, and biomedical research, as well as food and drug policy.
